Setting Goals: 2021 Bookish Resolutions

Happy New Year to my extended bookish family!

I can’t even tell you how good it feels to be finally putting 2020 behind me. Fuck you 2020! Talk about a complete and utter dumpster fire of a year. And while I’m not so naive to believe that everything is suddenly going to get better, I can’t help but feel a surge of hopeful energy.

And so, because it’s that time of year and your girl loves setting new goals, let’s get into my 2021 bookish resolutions.

Oh, and some good news: ~technically~ the new decade started yesterday so we can officially put 2020 to rest and wipe the slate clean moving forward. Phew!

Bookish Resolutions at a Glimpse

☆ Relax my Goodreads Reading Challenge
☆ Broaden my literary horizons
☆ Minimize my physical TBR by reading back listed books
☆ Actually read more classic literature
☆ Finish the first draft of my WIP

Relax my Goodreads Reading Challenge

Okay, yes – I’m 100% recycling this resolution from 2020. The thing is, I’ve definitely become disillusioned by the whole concept of reading challenges. Pushing yourself to meet goals is great and all but the pressure? The stress? Not so much.

In 2020 I set a goal of reading 50 books. Was it easily achievable? Hell yes – but that’s the beauty. I was able to read more for pleasure and it was GLORIOUS. I even managed to break my personal reading record, finishing up the year at 80 books. Which is why I’m doing it again in 2021.

Broaden my literary horizons

I think we can all agree that 2020 was a hard year – but it taught us a lot. Between staying home, lock downs and the Black Lives Matter movement I learnt that, in the grand scheme of things, my problems are actually quite trivial. Which is why I want to branch out and read a little more diversely in 2021.

Through the power of literature I want to explore and experience different cultures, different genres while supporting independent booksellers and diverse authors.

Minimise my Physical TBR by reading back listed books

2020 was the year of back listed reading. I read a LOT from my physical TBR – books that had been cultivating dust bunnies on my shelf for years. And it felt good. I slayed my dragons, one book at a time.  I think we’re all guilty of buying more books than we actually read but I want to keep this momentum going. My goal for 2021 is to get my physical TBR down to 30 books or less. For context, right now it’s sitting at about 60… Most of them being Shadowhunter books.

Actually Read More Classic Literature

Alright, it’s time for a confession: last year I definitely didn’t read enough classic literature. I think I’d set a goal of reading 6 classics and I’d barely scrapped away with 1 – 2 if you count Journey to the River Sea. But let’s be real – it was 2020 so I’m not going to beat myself up. With Melbourne in lock down for the most part I was constantly reaching for old favorites and those tried-and-true comfort reads. [I’m looking at you Twilight… Which is sort of a classic in its own right???].

Anyway, this year I’m looking to do a little better. I’m aiming to read 5 classics. And, as long as it’s certified classic literature, they can be re-reads or new reads.

Finish the first draft of my WIP

Remember way-back-when in September when I told you I’d FINALLY started the novel I’d dreamed of writing??? Yeah so I never made it past the third chapter [the love interest isn’t easy to crack, okay?]. Especially since Christmas is always super hectic working in retail.

But I’ve actually got the entire novel plotted from start to finish. I spent ages really honing the plot and characters – all I’ve got to do is write it. Which is what I actually hope to do in 2021. No procrastinating, no wallowing just some good ol’ fashion Butt in Chair [I can thank Alyson Noël for that one].

In case you were curious, I’d pitch it as a poignant, summer contemporary with a focus on healing, anxiety and found family.

So there you have it; my bookish resolutions for 2021. I just want to take a moment to thank every one of you for your unwavering support and friendship through what was a very difficult year. Interacting with you in the comments honestly made all the difference and I’m so thankful for this community. I’m sending you all my love and a BIG virtual hug.

Stay tuned for some way overdue end-of-year posts. I’ve got The Reading by Starlight Awards heading your way as well as some wrap ups and 2021 reading plans. But for now, Happy New Year! And don’t forget to share your own resolutions in the comments below.

  1. Happy New Year, and good luck with all your goals!
Minimising my TBR is definitely something I need to work on this year as well. I have loads of physical books I haven’t read, but for me it’s my Kindle that’s the main problem. I haven’t counted them, but I bet a good half of the books on there are unread. So I need to stop buying more, and start reading the ones I have!

    • Thank you so much Laura and a very belated Happy New Year to you too! Hopefully we can both stop buying so many new books this year and minimize our TBR’s – we’ve got this! 😉 💙

  2. Happy new year Alexandra!!!! holy moly 2020 was such a shitstorm and 2021 isn’t going to change anything overnight but it feels like there might be a glimmer of hope for the future so hallelujah. Also this was a dumpster fire year but one good thing was that I feel like I talked with you more and reading your comments always made my day!! ❤ ❤ congrats on reading more and feeling more relaxed about it this past year! also I've always hated classics but also I just rewatched Pride and Prejudice and Little Women and low-key want to read some Jane Austen now… hmm maybe it's because when I was in high school I was forced to read classics so I hated it on principle and now that I'm done with lit classes I'm okay with it again lmao just don't tell me what to do. I hope you accomplish your goal of reading more classics, although there's nothing wrong with rereading comfort reads haha I reread more than 20 books last year and have no regrets.

    • AHHHHHH HAPPY NEW YEAR, KAY! [Let’s ignore the fact that I’ve been MIA for months and never replied to my comments…]. I definitely feel though, that despite everything that’s STILL happening, 2021 does feel a lot better. Or maybe we’re just used to this shit now…

And I feel the very same – chatting with you SAVED 2020. And the fact that you recommending the Lunar Chronicles saved me during that 3 month hard lockdown. They were the perfect books to keep me distracted and that’s all thanks to you! #cresswellforever!

You know, Jane Austen is an author I’ve always wanted to read [and low key pretend I read???] but never have. I’ve started Emma multiple times but never finished… Whoops? Maybe this will be the year! I also started Little Woman last year after adoring the new movie but I put it down because it was too slow for lockdown. What little I did read was amazing – it has the very same wholesome vibe as the movie and I feel the language is a little more engaging than Austen. It’s definitely on my radar for 2021.

Hope you’re well – can’t wait to share more books this year! 💙💙💙

      • haha it’s okay I’m literally months behind in replying to comments too 0.O but on the bright side it’s lunar new year rn so I can say that I’m totally not late in saying happy new year… right… (*pats self on the back*)

wait I’m actually surprised you’ve never read Jane Austen?? idk you just gave off Austen vibes or something lol. i read three of her books and then was like ahhh I can’t take these dense classics anymore and now years later kinda want to read the other three? but also between my first comment and now I registered to take an English lit class in my university (not on purpose ahh it’s to fulfill a requirement but here we are one month after I said I’m done with lit classes forever) so I’ll probably be eating my words and complaining about classics in a month loll.

can’t wait to chat more with you in 2021 ❤

  3. oh my god it’s actually scary how alike our 2021 goals are 😭 i also don’t want to set a goodreads challenge for myself in the new year. in 2020 i set it to 100 books, and though i managed to hit that goal, i was incredibly stressed & it really sucked the joy out of reading. i really wanna see how i fare without any pressure to read x number of books. and i really wanna finish a first draft this year too!! i participated in and won nano, but then i realized that the draft i was working on was all wrong & i’m currently working on rewriting it. i hope we can both accomplish our goals in 2021, especially writing bc oh boy is it difficult 😭

    • HAPPY NEW YEAR, MAY! [Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply. I’ve been on an unexpected and unplanned hiatus but I can’t wait to catch up on all your posts!]. 💙

I definitely feel that reading challenges suck the joy from reading. They just add this unnecessary pressure and I feel like it encourages you to read not for escape or joy, but to hit a number. Reading is so much better when you’re doing it for YOU and not some challenge. I also find you somehow read more without that added stress? At least I did! 😉

Here’s to both of us finishing a draft this year and kicking butt – we’ve got this! x

  4. Happy new year, Alexandra!! Cheers to the new decade finally starting a few days ago 😂. Reading more classics is always one of my resolutions, but I definitely dropped the ball on it last year like you hahaha 😅. Best of luck with all your bookish goals, and I’m hooked with your WIP pitch btw 😍💛.

    • LOL – thank god I wasn’t the only one who dropped the ball on the classics! Phew! 😂😂😂 That said, it was such a weird year with so many weird reading moods so we kinda have a get out of jail free card. But hopefully we can do better this year! [We’ve totally got this!].

      So far said WIP is a MESS but we’re getting there… s l o w l y… 😅

Thank you so much for your message – HAPPY NEW YEAR [and sorry it’s taken me so long to respond]. Let’s kick some butt this year! 💙💙💙

  5. Happy New Year, Alexandra! Thank GOD that dumpster fire of a year is finally over!

You have so many great New Year’s resolutions! I think that making your Goodreads goal easily achievable is a wonderful idea! After all, where’s the fun in setting a stress inducing, unrealistically high reading goal? I also really love that you’re going to read more diversely this year, because that’s one of my resolutions too! Looking at all of the books I read in 2020, I can tell that I have a lot of work to do if I want to diversify my shelves. BLM has definitely taught me that diversity in literature is beyond critical!

This is such a wonderful post, and I’m wishing you luck in accomplishing all of your goals! HAPPY 2021!!! ❤

    • AHHHHHH HAPPY NEW YEAR! [Lol even though it’s freaking FEBRUARY *face palm*]. But honestly, thank god 2020 is finally in our dust because MAN what a year!

Making my Goodreads Challenged easily achievable definitely works for me – I feel like I actually read more when I’ve eliminated that extra pressure. I seem to enjoy what I’m reading more too.

The fact that we’re both trying to broaden our literary horizon’s this year is SO good. It’s definitely so important – now more than ever. You’ll have to shoot me over some recommendations if you discover some amazing diverse books! 😉

Here’s to us kicking butt in 2021 [and here’s to more awesome buddy reads!] 💙💙💙

    • Awwww thank you – that really means a lot. Especially when it’s been a hot minuet since I worked on said WIP. Actually, I opened it up again yesterday and read over my first few chapters to get myself back in my protagonist’s head and I was like WHAT IS THIS TRASH??? Haha it’s funny how taking a step back gives you a new perspective. That said, I’ve just got to push through and write – even if it’s the WORST first draft in the history of first drafts – we can totally polish it later haha. 😉

Wishing you a very belated Happy New Year! 💙
